Computer Software Engineering Research

Product Description

Computer hardware continues to get smaller and computer software continues
to get more complicated. Computer programming (often shortened to
programming or coding) is the process of writing, testing, and maintaining
the source code of computer programs. The source code is written in a
programming language. This code may be a modification of existing source or
something completely new.

The process of writing source code requires expertise in many different
subjects, including knowledge of the application domain and algorithms to
implement the desired behaviour. Within software engineering, programming
(the implementation) is regarded as one phase in a software development
process. This book presents new leading-edge international research in the
field.

Defects in Microelectronic Materials and Devices

Product Description

Focusing primarily on silicon-based microelectronics, Defects in
Microelectronic Materials and Devices provides a comprehensive overview of
recent progress in understanding of the effects of electrically active
defects in microelectronic materials. This book places particular emphasis
on defects that limit device quality, reliability, manufacturability, and
radiation response. Notable theorists and researchers present their
perspectives on defects in insulators and in semiconductors as well as
hydrogen and defect-related failure mechanisms. The text also discusses
compound semiconductor materials for microelectronic applications and
results from physics and engineering models.

Accountability and Oversight of US Exchange Rate Policy

Accountability and Oversight of US Exchange Rate Policy

Product Description

The dispute over Chinese exchange rate policy within the United States has
generated a series of legislative proposals to restrict the discretion of
the US Treasury Department in determining currency manipulation and to
reform the departments accountability to the Congress. This study reviews
the Treasurys reports to the Congress on exchange rate policy introduced by
the 1988 trade act and Congresss treatment of them. It finds that the
accountability process has often not worked well in practice: The coverage
of the reports has sometimes been incomplete and not provided a sufficient
basis for congressional oversight.

Nor has Congress always performed its own role well, holding hearings on
less than half of the reports and overlooking important substantive issues.
Several recommendations can improve guidance to the Treasury, standards for
assessment, and congressional oversight. These include (1) refining the
criteria used to determine currency manipulation and writing them into law;
(2) explicitly harnessing US decisions on manipulation to the IMFs rules on
exchange rates; (3) clarifying the general objectives of US exchange rate
policy; (4) reaffirming the mandate to seek international macroeconomic and
currency cooperation; and (5) institutionalizing multicommittee oversight
of exchange rate policy by Congress. As they develop legislation targeting
manipulation, furthermore, legislators should not lose sight of the broader
purposes of the 1988 act relating to the effective valuation of the dollar,
the current account, and their ramifications for the US economy overall.

Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision

I am very positive about this book. The authors have succeeded very well in
describing the main techniques in mainstream multiple view geometry, both
classical and modern, in a clear and consistent way. Computing Reviews a
book which is timely, extremely thorough and commendably clear Overall,
the approach is masterly The authors have managed to present the very
essence of the subject in a way which the most subtle ideas seem natural
and straightforward. I have never seen such a clear exploration of the
geometry of vision.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book. It deserves to be in the
library of every serious researcher in the field of computer vision.
Journal of Robotica The new edition features an extended introduction
covering the key ideas in the book (which itself have been updated with
additional examples and appendices) and significant new results which have
appeared since the first edition. Comprehensive background material is
provided, so readers familiar with linear algebra and basic numerical
methods can understand the projective geometry and estimation algorithms
presented, and implement the algorithms directly from the book.

Hyper-Narrative Interactive Cinema: Problems and Solutions

Hyper-Narrative Interactive Cinema: Problems and Solutions

Product Description

Hyper narrative interactive cinema refers to the possibility for users or
interactors to shift at different points in an evolving film narrative to
other film narrative trajectories. Such works have resulted so far in
interactor distraction rather than sustained engagement.

Contrary to post-modern textual and cognitive presumptions, film immersion
and computer game theories, this study uses dual coding theory, cognitive
load theory, and constructivist narrative film theory to claim that
interactive hyper-narrative distraction results from cognitive and
behavioral multi-tasking, which lead to split attention problems that
cannot be cognitively handled. Focus is upon split attention resulting from
the non-critical use of de-centered and non-cohering hyper-narrative and
audio-visual formations, and from interaction. For hyper-narrative
interactive cinema to sustain deep engagement, multi-tasking split
attention problems inhering in such computer-based works have to be
managed, and - most importantly - made to enhance rather than reduce
engagement. This book outlines some viable solutions to construct deep
cognitive-emotional engagement of interactors with hyper-narrative
interactive cinema.

Ancient Engineers Inventions: Precursors of the Present

Ancient Engineers' Inventions: Precursors of the Present

Product Description

This book describes inventions and designs of ancient engineers that are
the precursors of the present. The ages mainly range from 300 B.C. to 1600
A.D. with some exceptions from before and after this period.

As for the very ancient ones, the book describes inventions (documented by
archaeological finds mainly from Pompei, Ercolano and Stabia) that
generally are very little known and sometimes not known at all. Some
inventions are in the military field. This is because (unfortunately) many
inventions and technological innovations have been conceived starting from
military applications.

The book is divided into five parts.

The first four parts pertain to definite fields and present inventions
generally conceived up to the late Roman Empire. Inventions that are
representative of the engineering genius of the ancients and that may be
considered as milestones, each in their respective field.

The fifth part refers to fields of engineering (such as textiles and
automation) in which important innovations were conceived also in more
recent centuries.

For each of the inventions presented, even the ancient ones of many
centuries past, the authors provide three elements of research and
reference:

Written documents (the classics)

Iconic references (coins, bas-reliefs, etc.)

Archaeological findings.

The target groups of the book are students and scholars with interest on
History of Mechanical Engineering in Antiquity and Archaelogy.
