Computers in the Human Interaction Loop (Human-Computer Interaction Series)

Computers in the Human Interaction Loop (Human-Computer Interaction Series)

Product Description

“Maturing Usability” provides an understanding of how current research and practice has contributed towards improving quality issues in software, interaction and value.

Divided into three parts, 'Quality in Software' looks at how using development tools can enhance the usability of a system, and how methods and models can be integrated into the process to help develop effective user interfaces.

'Quality in Interaction' addresses theoretical frameworks on the nature of interactions; techniques and metrics for evaluation interaction quality; and the transfer of concepts and methods from research to practice. Finally, 'Quality in Value' assesses the impact that a system has in the real world, focusing on increasing the value of usability practice for software development and on increasing value for users.

A balance between theoretical and empirical approaches is maintained throughout, and all those interested in exploring usability issues in human-computer interaction will find this a very useful book.

Lynda.com - SQL Essential Training

Posted: 10 Apr 2009 04:44 PM PDT

Whatever a database is being used for—web sites, bookkeeping, sales and inventory, or even the lowly to-do list—it's all about the data. SQL Essential Training is designed to help users understand the most common language for database wrangling—SQL. Beginning with a brief introduction, instructor Bill Weinman teaches the major features of SQL; he offers a solid working knowledge of the language, and how to retrieve and manage data efficiently. He also works through a real-world example of building a CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) application using SQL. Exercise files accompany the course

Pro JavaScript Techniques

Pro JavaScript Techniques

Product Description

Pro JavaScript Techniques is the ultimate JavaScript book for the modern web developer. It provides everything you need to know about modern JavaScript, and shows what JavaScript can do for your web sites. This book doesnt waste any time looking at things you already know, like basic syntax and structures.

Expert web developer and author John Resig concentrates on fundamental, vital topicswhat modern JavaScripting is (and isnt), the current state of browser support, and pitfalls to be wary of. The book is organized into four sections:

  • Modern JavaScript developmentusing JavaScript the object-oriented way, creating reusable code, plus testing and debugging
  • DOM scriptingupdating content and styles, plus events, and effect and event libraries
  • Ajaxhow Ajax works, overcoming problems, and using libraries to speed up development of Ajax applications
  • The future of JavaScriptlooking at cutting edge topics like JSON, HTML 5, and more

All concepts are backed up by real-world examples and case studies, and John provides numerous reusable functions and classes to save you time in your development. There are also up-to-date reference appendixes for the DOM, events, browser support (including IE7), and frameworksso you can look up specific details quickly and easily.

About the Author
John Resig is a programmer and entrepreneur who’s been developing web applications for over eight years. Having primarily focused on back-end development for most of that time using Perl and MySQL, John changed his focus toward implementing usable web front ends. He holds a degree in computer science from Rochester Institute of Technology and has published several papers on data mining instant messaging networks. When he’s not programming, he enjoys watching movies, writing in his blog, www.ejohn.org, and spending time with his girlfriend.

Semiotic Engineering Methods for Scientific Research in HCI (Synthesis Lectures on Human-Centered Informatics)

Semiotic Engineering Methods for Scientific Research in HCI (Synthesis Lectures on Human-Centered Informatics)

Semiotic Engineering Methods for Scientific Research in HCI (Synthesis Lectures on Human-Centered Informatics)

Product Description
Semiotic engineering was originally proposed as a semiotic approach to designing user interface languages. Over the years, with research done at the Department of Informatics of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, it evolved into a semiotic theory of human-computer interaction (HCI). It views HCI as computer-mediated communication between designers and users at interaction time.

The system speaks for its designers in various types of conversations specified at design time. These conversations communicate the designers’ understanding of who the users are, what they know the users want or need to do, in which preferred ways, and why. The designers’ message to users includes even the interactive language in which users will have to communicate back with the system in order to achieve their specific goals. Hence, the process is, in fact, one of communication about communication, or metacommunication. Semiotic engineering has two methods to evaluate the quality of metacommunication in HCI: the semiotic inspection method (SIM) and the communicability evaluation method (CEM). Up to now, they have been mainly used and discussed in technical contexts, focusing on how to detect problems and how to improve the metacommunication of specific systems. In this book, Clarisse de Souza and Carla Leitão discuss how SIM and CEM, which are both qualitative methods, can also be used in scientific contexts to generate new knowledge about HCI. The discussion goes into deep considerations about scientific methodology, calling the reader’s attention to the essence of qualitative methods in research and the kinds of results they can produce. To illustrate their points, the authors present an extensive case study with a free open-source digital audio editor called Audacity. They show how the results obtained with a triangulation of SIM and CEM point at new research avenues not only for semiotic engineering and HCI but also for other areas of computer science such as software engineering and programming.
