This masterly collection of texts interrogates the raging academic question, What is art history? Editor Preziosi, who directs ground-breaking critical studies of art history and museology, provides introductions to 35 challenging readings gathered in nine chapters. This plethora of alternatives is curiously complicated, even obfuscating. Covered here are the most current and relevant approaches to aesthetics, style, iconography and semiology, feminism, gender studies, formalism, postmodernism, deconstruction, museography, hybridity, and multiculturalism; those offering critical analysis range from Winckelmann, Kant, Wolfflin, Panofsky, Schapiro, Gombrich, and Derrida to Rosalind Krauss and Carol Duncan. Ultimately, this book is best suited to upper- and graduate-level collections and to the reference shelf of specialized art collections, as it proposes the discipline of art history itself as an art.AMary Hamel-Schwulst, Towson Univ., MD

When, in May 2004, the European Union welcomed the accession of 10 new member countries–primarily from former Communist Central Europe and the Baltics–the EU’s population increased by 20%. The 10 Accession States added a combined population of 75 million and GDP of more than $430 billion. There is a considerable momentum in these economies as a result of the major investment by global companies, the emergence of local SMEs and the restructuring of former state corporations. Each major country in the region is a substantial industrial and consumer market in its own right and many of these countries are working hard to catch up on the rest of Europe and have shown, by solid economic growth, that they have the capability to become more important players in Europe. This book examines how the accession process has affected the economic prospects of the new member states and the enlarged EU as a whole. It focuses on the opportunities for foreign investors in each of the 10 new members, comparing their economic environment and business conditions with those of the 15 longer-established member states. It also includes a detailed assessment of business conditions in the three latest admission candidates: Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania and details of key inward investors.

The Ecology of Building Materials explores key questions surrounding sustainability of building materials. With legislation such as the Code for Sustainable Homes being introduced to regulate the required sustainability of new builds, it is essential that sustainability starts with the raw materials of a project. The book provides technical data to enable architects to choose the most appropriate sustainable materials for a project, as well as providing information and guidance on a wide range of issues such as recycling, Life Cycle Analysis, and manufacturers’ environmental claims. Berge’s book, translated from the Norwegian by Chris Butters and Filip Henley, offers safe and environmentally friendly options, to avoid high consumption of energy and materials in building. It provides an essential and easy-to-use reference guide to this complex subject for the building industry professional.
