As the number 18 marks the year young people come of age in Italy, the society invited two generations of researchers to participate in a discussion on neural networks: those new to the field and those with extensive familiarity with the neural paradigm. The challenge laid in understanding what remains of the revolutionary ideas from which neural networks stemmed in the eighties, how these networks have evolved and influenced other research fields, and ultimately, what the new conceptual/methodological frontiers are that need to be trespassed for a better exploitation of the information carried by data. | Multimodal Corpor: From Models of Natural Interaction to Systems and Applications Posted: 05 Oct 2009 11:43 AM PDT  Multimodal Corpor: From Models of Natural Interaction to Systems and Applications Product Description This state-of-the-art-survey documents the scientific outcome of the International Workshop on “Multimodal Corpora: From Models of Natural Interaction to Systems and Applications”, held in conjunction with the 6th International Conference for Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC) on May 27, 2008, in Marrakech, Morocco. It presents an introduction to, as well as current research from fields as diverse as psychology, artificial intelligence, robotics, signal processing, computational linguistics and human-computer interaction. Empirically based research in multimodality starts with collecting video data relevant for a specific research question, this data must then be enriched by human coders, who annotate the corpus and who also explore the potential interconnections between modalities (e.g. face, gesture, speech, posture etc.). The data must then be validated for consistency using quantitative measures – systematic analysis of the observed multimodal behaviors is the central characteristic of multimodal corpora. For analysis and modeling tasks, exploratory qualitative and quantitative analysis tools are needed for browsing, viewing, extraction and modeling. All the time the intercultural dimension must be taken into account, since multimodal interaction is always embedded in a social setting. The 6 selected workshop contributions are complemented by 7 invited research articles, including contributions from major international multimodal corpus projects like AMI and SmartWeb. All papers underwent a special review process for this volume, resulting in significant revisions and extensions based on the experts’ advice. |

This book provides a thorough treatment of the theory of stochastic max-plus linear systems. Max-plus algebra is an algebraic approach to discrete event systems (DES), like queuing networks that are prone to synchronization. Perturbation analysis studies the sensitivity of the performance of DES with respect to changes in a particular system parameter. The first part of the book addresses modeling issues and stability theory for stochastic max-plus systems. The second part of the book treats perturbation analysis of max-plus systems: a calculus for differentiation of max-plus systems is developed. This calculus leads to numerical evaluations of performance indices of max-plus linear stochastic systems, such as the Lyapunov exponent or waiting times. |
