The objective of this state-of-the-art survey is to give a coherentoverview of the main topics and results achieved by the Network of Excellence REWERSE on “Reasoning on the Web”, funded by the European Commission and Switzerland within the “6th Framework Programme” (FP6),from 2004 to 2008.
The material has been organized into eight chapters, each of which addresses one of the main topics of REWERSE: hybrid reasoning with rules and ontologies, lessons in versatility or how query languages adapt to the Web, evolution and reactivity in the Semantic Web, rule-based policyrepresentations and reasoning, component models for Semantic Weblanguages, controlled English for reasoning on the Semantic Web,semantic search with GoPubMed, and information integration inbioinformatics with ontologies and standards.
Each chapter gives an in-depth coverage of the subject and provides an extensive bibliography with pointers to further literature.

Get started in web development using PHP. Even if you’ve never programmed before, author Jason Lengstorf introduces you to PHP by building a PHP-based blogging site while covering all the good coding practices and skills that you’ll need when you start your own projects.
Jason Lengstorf takes a practical approach to teaching you how to build a content management system. You’ll dive into writing web applications and be guided by the author’s supportive explanations, rather than learning elements of the PHP language and viewing examples after.
PHP for Absolute Beginners starts slowly and covers everything you need to know about beginning web development using PHP. Even the most inexperienced web developer will find this book accessible.

The book is a collection of selected papers from the 18th WIRN workshop, the annual meeting of the Italian Neural Networks Society (SIREN). As the number 18 marks the year young people come of age in Italy, the society invited two generations of researchers to participate in a discussion on neural networks: those new to the field and those with extensive familiarity with the neural paradigm. The challenge laid in understanding what remains of the revolutionary ideas from which neural networks stemmed in the eighties, how these networks have evolved and influenced other research fields, and ultimately, what the new conceptual/methodological frontiers are that need to be trespassed for a better exploitation of the information carried by data. This book presents the outcome of this discussion. New Directions in Neural Networks is divided in two general subjects, models and applications and two specific ones, economy and complexity and remote sensing image processing. The editors of this book have set out to publish a scientific contribution to the discovery of new forms of cooperative work that are necessary today for the invention of efficient computational systems and new social paradigms.

This state-of-the-art-survey documents the scientific outcome of the International Workshop on “Multimodal Corpora: From Models of Natural Interaction to Systems and Applications”, held in conjunction with the 6th International Conference for Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC) on May 27, 2008, in Marrakech, Morocco. It presents an introduction to, as well as current research from fields as diverse as psychology, artificial intelligence, robotics, signal processing, computational linguistics and human-computer interaction.
Empirically based research in multimodality starts with collecting video data relevant for a specific research question, this data must then be enriched by human coders, who annotate the corpus and who also explore the potential interconnections between modalities (e.g. face, gesture, speech, posture etc.). The data must then be validated for consistency using quantitative measures – systematic analysis of the observed multimodal behaviors is the central characteristic of multimodal corpora. For analysis and modeling tasks, exploratory qualitative and quantitative analysis tools are needed for browsing, viewing, extraction and modeling. All the time the intercultural dimension must be taken into account, since multimodal interaction is always embedded in a social setting.
The 6 selected workshop contributions are complemented by 7 invited research articles, including contributions from major international multimodal corpus projects like AMI and SmartWeb. All papers underwent a special review process for this volume, resulting in significant revisions and extensions based on the experts’ advice.

During the last decade, the area of stochastic max-plus linear systems has witnessed a rapid development, which created a growing interest in this area. This book provides a thorough treatment of the theory of stochastic max-plus linear systems. Max-plus algebra is an algebraic approach to discrete event systems (DES), like queuing networks that are prone to synchronization. Perturbation analysis studies the sensitivity of the performance of DES with respect to changes in a particular system parameter.
The first part of the book addresses modeling issues and stability theory for stochastic max-plus systems. The second part of the book treats perturbation analysis of max-plus systems: a calculus for differentiation of max-plus systems is developed. This calculus leads to numerical evaluations of performance indices of max-plus linear stochastic systems, such as the Lyapunov exponent or waiting times.

This volume contains seven chapters divided into two parts. The first three chapters describe the social networking phenomenon and provide insights into the technology and influences on our culture. The last four chapters provide details of the underlying technology that allows the web to expand to include these social networking sites, as well as other new applications for information dissemination, accessing, and sharing.
